  Star Trek Communicator, Well Almost
Posted on Friday November 22, @07:16PM Pacific
Net Devices Vocera has produced a Star Trek Communicator like system running on top of an 802.11 network. The Vocera Communications System allows mobile workers to instantly communicate with one another while roaming and away from wired telephones. The system consists of the Vocera Communications Server Software and the Vocera Communications Badge, a small wearable device that permits fast, one-button voice access to other users on the system. The way the system works is that one pushes the button on the badge and says, "Connect me to John" or "Connect me to Engineering". The software on the server will then locate the person you are trying to contact and ask if they want to take your call. The system is currently being marketed to hospitals.
