Electronic Communications Networks - ECNs have had an incredible effect on stock market trading. Island is one of the leading ECNs. Island takes a uniquely open approach to their trading system, which earns them mention here. Island operates by matching buy and sell orders. Each time an order is received, the Island limit order book is instantaneously scanned to determine if there is a matching order. If there is a matching order, the order is executed immediately. In the event that there is no matching order, the order is displayed on the Island limit order book until a matching order is received or the order is cancelled. The great thing about Island is that anybody can see the book of limit orders in real time either in your browser or on your Palm VII. Super Cool!!!
